Some see the gym as a haven. Somewhere to unleash their stresses of the day and relax. Others see the gym as a place of anxiety, fear and intimidation. It’s important to remember ..
Nobody is watching you as closely as you think. And they certainly don’t care half as much.
Is this right?
Are they watching?
Is this light, do I look weak? / Do I have weird sweat marks?
How many times have you asked yourself that in the gym? Especially when there are a bunch of people around who look like they could be Mr/Ms Olympia and know exactly what they’re doing. I can guarantee you even they started out where you are.
And those people are generally more concerned with their own sweat marks and the way they look in the gym, rather than concentrating on you.
I found that going in with earphones can help. People tend to leave you alone and don’t really acknowledge you if you have them in. They can help you to zone out from the intimidation you may be feeling when you walk in.
Make a plan
The first key question you need to ask yourself is whether you want to lose weight or build muscle.
Then decide how many days you will (realistically) get to the gym, what type of training you will be doing on each day and your macro intake for each day.
It’s all good planning to go to the gym and making it through the door, but you need to plan your workouts to make sure you aren’t left wondering around the gym aimlessly. This will lead to a lot of wasted time and you’ll probably walk out feeling like you haven’t achieved anything.
Progress will not happen overnight
It’s important when you start a new fitness routine to remember that change doesn’t happen straight away. Remind yourself regularly how far you’ve come and how well you are doing.
